This photo was taken from the MV SA Agulhas, the South African Antarctic resupply vessel, during the annual resupply voyage in 2005. The ship had left Cape Town in early December, and took two weeks to make the crossing to the continent, often becoming completely trapped in thick pack ice. We would go to sleep at night, the ship inescapably trapped in a massive ice flow, and in the morning, we'd wake to perfectly smooth, clear waters with just a couple of ice bergs around. This picture was snapped on just such a day, near Penguin Bukta, close to the Greenwich Meridian. |
