Late summer sunrise seen from Mt Tolmie in Saanich, BC. The prominent peak in the distance is Mt Baker in Washington, USA. Sunrise colours are caused by refraction in the air between the sun and your eye. Bright colours with distinct separation require a long path length through clear air. Given the predominance of red tones in this image and the generally hazy appearance it seems there was some dust (aerosols) preventing optimum transmission of light.
