Sunset light shines on distant high clouds while nearby and lower altitude cumulus are lit only by shorter wavelength light scattered from the atmosphere. The thin wispy clouds dark apparently above the rest are nearby, low in altitude, and completely in the shadow of the Earth and clouds.
