Shadow of a cumulus cloud on lower clouds
Credit: E. Wiebe

Looking east we see the shadow cast on a lower layer of clouds by a towering cumulus illuminated by the morning sun. This photograph was made on 1 April 2010. It is extremely difficult to determine cloud height just by examination. In this case the shadow makes relative cloud height apparent.
