Near the summit of Mt Work in the Highlands District on south Vancouver Island hikers find an icy pool. This region experiences particularly distinct wet and dry seasons. The late fall and winter months bring about two thirds of the annual precipitation. Pools like this are seasonal and provide habitat for animals such as tree frogs. Temperatures drop below freezing for short periods during the coldest months. This photo was taken on 31 December, 2015 with the air temperature just below 0 °C at this elevation (approximately 450 m).
