This image from the NASA Earth Observatory shows a lee wave formed by wind flowing over Amsterdam Island in the southern Indian Ocean. This is analagous to the wake following a moving boat in still water. Here the island is still and the air is flowing past it. The large white patch covering the top of the image is a larger more uniform cloud layer. This image spans about 600 km horizontally (west-east direction) and the wavelength of the wave is about 10 km.
