Mount Baker in Washington state (USA) is east of Victoria. It is seen here silhouetted by the rising sun. Volcanoes (this one is -mostly- dormant) contribute to climate change through their emissions and can cause both warming and cooling. Dust, ash and sulfur gases cause cooling by reflecting solar energy away from the Earth's surface. Water vapour and carbon dioxide emissions lead to warming by absorbing and reemitting infrared light. There are many web sites discussing these effects and more. |
