The rugged New Zealand Southern Alps lie on the Alpine Fault, between the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates. During the austral summer months, low stratospheric ozone levels result in vivid colors as a result of high levels of incoming ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen is mandatory.
