A Tiger Swallowtail butterfly looking for nectar on July blossoms. Butterflies undergo a remarkable chrysalis phase in their metamorphosis from the larval to adult stages of life. During this time their bodies are almost entirely digested by their own enzymes. This material is used by special cells, preserved during the digestion process, to regrow the animal into a new form. |
