December on Vancouver Island is a transition month. The last month of autumn and the first month of winter. The rains usually begin in earnest and snow falls at higher elevations and during cold snaps. The sun dips to its lowest elevation and when clouds permit brings long shadows and light that shines sharply into your eyes.

A few days later wind has knocked loose most of the leaves and a light snow has dusted the forest floor.
